“A long time ago, in a faraway village in rural Japan, a master carpenter built a house with a room of a thousand mirrors. Shortly after that, the village became very popular because of this unusual house. It wasn’t long before it was famous in the samurai caste and from the simplest samurai to daimyo, and even the most important daimyo together with the shogun came to see it. In less than two years the house had been seen by all the important people, and the Emperor, also, who was considered the Sun’s son, came to see this miracle. Seeing what a beneficial impact it had on them all, the owner of the house decided to always leave the doors open so it could be visited anytime by anyone. This is how one day, just before the sunset, a downcast dog passed by this house. It was one of those dogs that are never in the mood to play, that are always gloomy and that growl if you give them too much of your attention. This dog decided to enter hoping to find someone to give him something to eat. It is important to note that, before entering the room with the thousand mirrors, he had to pass through a dark hallway. While the dog was crossing this hall, a thousand concerns and worries overtook him. The closer he came to the door of the mirrored room, the more afraid he was. After coming halfway, and seeing there was no danger, instead of encouraging himself to calmly advance, he let himself be fooled by fear. “Who knows what’s hiding in this darkness? Look, a light, but what if there’s someone who wants to hurt me?” Carried by these thoughts, he would have retreated, but pushed by his hunger, he kept moving forward. Entering the room, he found a thousand dogs watching him suspiciously. “I knew it, I was right!! Here I’ll find my end! All of them will just hurt me!” Out of fear, his hair went up on his back and he instinctively put himself on guard; at this moment, he saw a thousand dogs preparing to attack. Not knowing what to do, he started barking, but the result was that a thousand dogs started barking. Frightened, he started screaming, but he was overwhelmed by the roar of the thousand dogs, so he started running… When he was out of this house, he thought it was a horrible place, and he would never go back again because he had just lived through the worst experience of his life. A few days later, another dog was passing in the courtyard, but this time it was a small, happy dog. One of those restless dogs, a gentle, jumpy dog that is always looking for a reason to celebrate life. Seeing the door open, he decided to enter the house, thinking he would find someone to play with. While crossing the dark hallway, he started thinking: “Who knows what surprise will be waiting for me at the end of this hall? It will certainly be a pleasant surprise, life has always something good for me, just wait and see how much fun it will be!” But going halfway and seeing that there was nothing for him, just before discouraging himself, he saw the light at the end of the tunnel. He got excited and started running forward thinking: “There is just a little more, a few more steps and I get there!! Who knows what surprise life has prepared for me?!” Carried by these thoughts, he entered the room of a thousand mirrors with a sincere smile on his face. Great was his joy when he met a thousand dogs that smiled and gladly fawned just like himself. Seeing so many friendly faces he started jumping with joy, and he saw then that he was followed by a thousand other dogs, and he thought: “How much these dogs like me!” and when he started dancing there was a huge surprise: In front of him were a thousand dogs doing a breakdance. Leaving the house he thought: “What a wonderful place, and what nice welcoming dogs… I will definitely come back here again.”
Dear Papion, look at this room as if it was nothing but everyday life and the thousand mirrors were the faces you meet every day. What reflections do you see on the faces of the people you meet?
-I never thought about the others around me like this, but from now on, I will definitely reflect before jumping to conclusions. What was the second thing you wanted to talk to me about? Papion asked.
